I was contacted by a former HP colleague. I was flattered that he remembered me, as he is now a big name in his field, having been a VP at various companies. He was interested in a website that he could use to solicit VC firms for funding – so a professional presentation was critical. My proposal was certainly reasonable, but in the end he would not spend the money. He decided to do the website himself but wanted to hire me by the hour to give him a checklist of implementation pointers and best practices.
Um, what? Sorry, but you pay me because I’m an expert at doing it, not because I’m going to spill 15+ years of professional knowledge in a bullet list so you can do it yourself.
